Relationship Out of Focus Leads to Fallout

By Ted Segura When couples focus on the small details in a marriage, the relationship seems to start going awry. You begin to have marriage troubles Many urgent but not important activities set in and distract them. Phone calls, people dropping in to deliver things or just to chat, bills that are becoming due, appointments with the doctor, dentist, the vet. There are always things that need to be done, things that need immediate attention. Then there are petty arguments that set in. Why did you buy that item without consulting with me? Why do you need to go out bowling again? You never stay home or you prefer to be out with your friends or colleagues These are normal day-to-day happenings but do you feel your blood pressure going up? How about that stress level, is it rising? Then you start raising your voice at your partner, arguments ensue and nerves are frayed. These things happen when the relationship gets out of focus. When the couples get carried away with all the details in relationship, the more important aspects like building the relationship is set aside. But you will say that we need to do the things mentioned earlier. We need to go to the cleaners, take the trash out, pay the bills, etc. etc. etc. Yes, these activities are urgent and even important and they need to be done. However, pausing from all these activities to build the relationship is what we are talking about. It is focusing on what is truly important. It is building the foundation for a strong and lasting relationship. Its about avoiding marriage troubles. What does it take to make the relationship solid? Its really simple, its setting aside time to spend together, pausing during the day to have a cup of coffee to share some moments of the day alone with each other. These are at the core of the relationship. We need to go back to whats important. Its not the activities. Its focusing on each other on certain times of the day. To go back to reason we had the relationship in the first place. Its telling each other that we love one another. Its reassuring each other of the love that we have for each other. It does not matter if these reminders are done early in the morning or late at night. We need to pause from all the activities of the day to tell our partner that we love him or her. There is a great temptation to dump the whole days problems, worries and concerns to our partner at the end of the day. We need to learn to leave the concerns of the office at the office where they belong. Instead, we can talk about the positive things that happened during the day, the small victories, the achievements of the children, the neighbor whose day was made when we complemented them. These build the relationship. The problems, worries and concerns in the office can be handled when we get back to the office the next day. Again, dumping them on our spouse will not help the relationship a bit. This will lead to marriage troubles. Focus on whats important, focus on the positive aspects of your relationship, edify each other, and build each other up. Strengthen that bond of love between you and your spouse. My Spring Bulbs Won’t Bloom - Why?

By Doug Green You can hear the wailing from here. Why arent my bulbs blooming? There are a lot of leaves on them but not a single flower. The overall cause of a bulb not producing a bloom is either the bud wasnt formed or it was damaged in some way. No bud equals no flower. Heres why your bud might have been killed: There wasnt enough sunlight last summer or you planted your bulbs in too shady an area. For the most part, spring blooming bulbs want full sunshine for at least six hours a day. If you do not give them enough sunshine, they may live but not have enough energy to produce a flower bud. You might have cut off the foliage last year before it yellowed naturally. If you cut off the foliage before it yellows, the bulb will not be able to get enough sunlight to produce a bud. Remember Doug Greens number one rule for growing bulbs, Grow the foliage, the flower will take care of itself. You might have tied up the foliage over top of the bulb to give yourself room to plant annuals. This is an old trick that wont go away but is still not recommended for growing good bulb leaves. (Do you think youd grow very well if you had to hold your arms over your head all the time?) You might have planted them too early last fall. Once the bulb had rooted and the ground was still warm, it might have started to produce a flower bud. Once that bud emerges, it either lives or dies on the soil temperature. An emerged bud that hits frozen or too-cold soil is going to die and this means there wont be another bud for the following spring. Perhaps you overfed or overwatered those bulbs. Overwatering bulbs will most often kill them because they will rot (think of leaving an onion in a glass of water). Spring flowering bulbs have developed in areas where there is winter-cold and spring-rains but summer drought. When you water your garden in the summer to keep the annuals and perennials happy, you are making your bulbs unhappy. Too much water and the bulbs will disappear taking their flowers with them. Perhaps the bulbs have grown up magnificently and multiplied. If so, they might simply require dividing to produce flowers again. This is not likely in a normal garden setting but possible. You can tell if there are scads of leaves all coming from the same small area if the bulbs are too crowded. You want to know if it is a disease. The odds are that it is not. Bulb diseases either disfigure flowers or kill the bulbs. None just kill off the flower bud. The odds are it is a cultural thing and not a disease. You just have to figure out what you need to give the bulb to make it happy. Doing What I Can to Live Environmentally Consciously

By Cara Mirabella Its January and in New Jersey, its 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I think to myself sarcastically, And they say there is no such thing as global warming. But what can we do about it? Here are some things that Ive been doing, and, upon writing this article, Ive discovered some of the other benefits to my actions. First, the obvious I recycle everything that I can. I even rinse off aluminum foil and put it in my recycling can. Did you know that some towns will recycle Styrofoam cups? Check with your municipality. And speaking of Styrofoam cups, I use a travel mug as often as possible to cut down on waste in landfills. I only do laundry when I have a full load, and I wash everything in warm or cold water. I line dry as much as possible, which means I use my dryer less. This also helps me get more milage out of my clothes, and they retain their shape and color longer. And before putting a load in the dryer, I give it an extra spin cycle to reducing the drying time. My clothes and blankets get donated to Goodwill or the local animal shelter. This not only reduces the amount of garbage going to land fills, it also feels good knowing that someone or some pet will keep warm this winter with my castoffs. My dishwasher is only run when its full, and I dont use the drying cycle. I buy organic foods, especially milk, eggs, meat, and produce. Not only does that reduce the amount of pesticides in the environment, Im also supporting local small farmers. This is getting easier to do now since the bigger grocery stores are catching on to the organic craze and are providing us more options for organic products. My kitchen waste gets composted things like orange rinds, eggshells and coffee grinds. Please note that you should never compost meats or meal leftovers. I use a chipper shredder to make the yard waste into mulch. My garden gets better every year with homemade fertilizer and mulch. I use canvas shopping bags at the grocery store. But when I do get plastic bags, I reuse them or bring them back to the store. Most stores have a bin where you can bring back your bags. I burn only soy candles. This eliminates the potentially harmful fumes from paraffin wax candles. I also reuse the candle leftovers in a warming pot and reuse the containers for potpourri or to store little things like buttons, cotton balls, and bath salts. Cloth diapers that I purchased as burp-cloths for my infant are used for cleaning up spills and dusting in my home. I have pets and a toddler, so I cant completely eliminate paper towels, but I use as few as possible. Once the diapers get older and beat-up, they go in a box to be used for washing the cars, or for my husband to use in his workshop. Ive eliminated the harsh chemicals in my home by replacing my cleaning products with toxin-free alternatives. No bleach, ammonia or phosphates in my house so Im not polluting our water or filling the landfills with more harsh chemicals. This also eliminates some more potentially harmful fumes in my home. So you see, every day I live environmentally conscious. I may still drive a gas-guzzling SUV, but its paid for I cant just run out and buy a hybrid. So I do what I can, hoping it makes a difference. Building Trade Show Traffic and Time Management - A True Story

By RJ Williams The first thing I did before I ever exhibited at a trade show was learn everything I could about exhibiting. The one thing that stuck in my head was Time Management. One particular show comes to mind. There were thousands of attendees, but only a limited amount of potential buyers of my product. So, it was important for me to set a goal of getting as many qualified leads as I could, and then market to them after the show. Heres what I did. I bought a putter, a portable putting green, 300 globe stressballs, and T-Shirts. I drew traffic by offering a free t-shirt to anyone who could make a putt. Now here was the kicker They had to make the putt with a globe stress ball - not a golf ball! Trade shows are fun and most people enjoyed taking putts and watching others putt. It was always funny for the non golfers to see their golfer co-workers put on an even playing field. So here was the plan. While people were waiting their turn to putt, we made sure to ask them what they did, and if they ever bought promotional products. Now, everyone who made the putt got a free T-Shirt, but if we found out that they were not qualified and they missed the putt, we didnt want to spend too much time with them. We simply gave them the stress ball and some literature to pass along to the decision maker. We moved them in and out of the booth in 3 minutes. If we felt they were qualified, after the putt we would take them through our sales pitch. Whether they made the putt or not, we made sure to give them an assortment of samples, company literature, and a T-Shirt. What makes this so special? The T-Shirt was not only an item with more perceived valuable, but as Imentioned in a few of my other articles, wearables have a huge retention and re-use rate. So we made sure to get repeated exposure to a qualified prospect who had the need for our service. But you know what else? We took their business card or information and asked permission to follow up after the show. Wedid not take information from unqualified buyers. Why is this important? Because if they are not a qualified prospect, you dont want to spend time and money marketing to them after the show. I never rented a lead system because I did not want a bunch of non qualified leads in my database. The business cards we collected were stapled to a lead sheet where we wrote notes to use in our follow up. All of our marketing after the show was focused on buyers. Needless to say we had a great conversion rate. Let me just quickly reiterate. The product we used to move them along was the stress ball. Everybody left the booth happy and we kept the lead machine moving. Keep in mindUnqualified leads cheering in your booth is a good thing too. People were drawn to the buzz in our booth. Remember,traffic draws traffic. Slow days and slow hours were always busier for us than the booths around us. There are a lot of different things you can do with tradeshow giveaways but as you can see from my example you should probably have a disqualifier (inexpensive) and a qualifier item. Conscious Mating: Is This the Right Relationship for Me?

By David Steele Prior to making a commitment in a relationship, or in the “pre-commitment” stage, is your opportunity to choose your future as consciously as possible. YOU ARE A PIONEER You are the pioneer of your life. And if you are reading this you are most likely seeking to be the pioneer of your relationships by striving to break free of past patterns and make conscious relationship choices. As a relationship pioneer your goal is to be fully aware of the long-term impact of your choices and date and mate with conscious intention. You are determined to create the life and relationship you really want and believe that true love and fulfillment will happen only if you go after what you really want and dont settle for less. Everyone begins their journey towards a successful and fulfilling committed life partnership as a single. When you date and finally find someone to bond with in a relationship it’s very exciting, but at the same time, most are conscious of the question “Is this the right relationship for me?” and are in what I call the “Pre-commitment Stage” of a relationship. The journey from single to becoming a conscious couple in a successful, fulfilling committed life partnership I call “Conscious Mating.” Just as a conscious single must have clarity about who you are, what you want, and how to get it, so must a conscious couple. As challenging as it is for you to make good long term relationship choices when youre single, it can be even more challenging to make good long-term relationship choices when in a pre-committed relationship. WHAT IS PRE-COMMITMENT? When singles become couples in today’s world, most are wondering at some level “Is this ‘The One’? Should I be with this person for the rest of my life?” They are an exclusive couple, but not yet committed. It may be tempting to call these couples “pre-marital” as a catch-all term to include all couples that haven’t yet taken the step of becoming committed. However, in our opinion, the mindset of a pre-marital couple is “We want to be married,” which is very different from the pre-commitment mindset of “Is this the right relationship for me?” When I first identified the pre-commitment stage and started developing some approaches to working with these couples, I recognized this stage as different than “pre-marital” but didn’t know what to call it. The label “pre-commitment” was intended to be temporary, but it stuck. I was amazed at the lack of recognition, information, and resources for this stage of relationship among mainstream relationship experts and the available research and literature. Even today, while this phenomenon has become common practice in our culture it is still largely unrecognized in the mainstream, which I hope to change with articles such as this one. TWO TYPES OF PRE-COMMITMENT Pre-committed couples generally fall into two categories- UNCONSCIOUS- typically following the “mini-marriage” model of trying the relationship out, acting committed without actually making the commitment. A disconnect of fact and attitude. CONSCIOUS- aware that they are not yet committed, usually have commitment as a goal, asking themselves “Is this the right relationship for me? Should I make a commitment?” An alignment of fact and attitude. ROMANTIC LOVE AND PRE-COMMITMENT There are many misconceptions about love. Our culture glorifies the romantic love stage of relationship in literature, theatre, television, and movies. It is that initial infatuation stage of a relationship when our chemistry is in high gear and we experience euphoria. Powerful amphetamine-like neurotransmitters flood and alter our brain chemistry. While unsustainable, the romantic love stage serves an important purpose because it gives us a taste of our best and most powerful selves. If the relationship turns out to be a good long-term choice, this stage bonds us together and prepares us to weather lifes inevitable storms. Confusing this initial romantic stage with real, sustainable love is a mistake that can be our undoing. We want and expect to be happy, and romantic love is eternally optimistic. We dont want to believe that when we experience this intense chemistry with someone that it wont work. We want to avoid the pain of failure and can be tempted to try hard to fit a round peg into a square hole, twisting ourselves into a pretzel trying to make a relationship work. In todays world when singles become couples, few jump blindly into immediate commitment. Most new couples are pre-committed, meaning they are an exclusive couple, but they havent yet decided the future of their relationship. This stage coincides with romantic love, and conscious couples who understand relationships realize the need to get to know one another long enough for the infatuation to wear off and experience the reality before making irreversible long-term choices. CONSCIOUS MATING A RADICAL POSITION Here is the radical truth: Relationships do break up. As hard as we might try to prevent and avoid relationship failure, it happens anyway. Because there are many unconscious forces at work in every stage of a relationship, being fully aware isnt easy and controlling the outcome is impossible.. These unconscious forces have the potential for undermining our best efforts to sustain love if we are not aware. In Conscious Mating, rather than unconsciously believing romantic fantasies of living happily ever after, we accept this truth. Since relationships break up anyway, why not be as conscious as possible in the process and increase our odds of success? CHOOSING YOUR RELATIONSHIP CHALLENGES Every relationship has challenges. This is normal and does not mean there is something inherently wrong with your relationship. Some challenges are solvable and can be addressed and resolved, others are perpetually unsolvable. Prior to making a commitment in a relationship, or in the “pre-commitment” stage, is your opportunity to choose your future as objectively as possible. You can use the pre-commitment stage of a relationship to identify the solvable challenges and unsolvable problems in this relationship. You can then make a conscious choice to take them on and live with them, or decide that they sabotage the long-term sustainability of your relationship and walk away while you still can with much less pain and cost than further down the road. In pre-commitment you are in an exclusive relationship that is not yet committed. This gives you an opportunity to identify whether this relationship meets your requirements and needs for a successful long-term relationship before you make a commitment. Using the pre-commitment stage to make conscious long-term choices makes good sense. PAIN PREVENTION Even if you experience the pain of breaking up in the pre-commitment stage, this prevents you from experiencing even greater pain down the road. Making the most conscious choice possible before making a commitment is, in our opinion, a pain-prevention gift you can give to yourself. As difficult as it is to make the choice to end a relationship, you will save yourself the devastation you will surely experience at the end of a mini-marriage or a divorce, especially where children are involved. If you are in a relationship that is not yet committed and are asking the question Is this the right relationship for me? I encourage you to make a long-term relationship choice that will result in the life and relationship that you really want before you make a commitment. We must acknowledge the possibility that your current relationship is not The One. Therefore, I suggest you seek to gain clarity about what you really want and need in a relationship and whether or not your current relationship will result in living the life you love with the love of your life. Most of the fat that you eat is in the form of triglycerides. These fats occur in both animal and plant foods. Triglycerides have a chemical structure shaped like an E. The “tri” of triglycerides means that there are three vertical lines off the horizontal line of the fat molecule. Monoglycerides have only one vertical line, and diglycerides have only two. Otherwise all three glycerides are fats and affect your body in the same way. They all have nine calories per gram and are broken down in the same way to form the same building blocks that are absorbed from your intestines into your bloodstream. While triglycerides comprise most of the fat that you eat, monoglycerides and diglycerides together make up less than one percent. How the Grace of a Broken Heart Can Open Our Eyes to the Broken World Around Us

By Les Herron Have you ever been brokenhearted? No, I do not mean back in the day when you got your heart broken by a cute blonde or a hunky guy! That just does not count! I am not speaking about the lovely little broken heart that is really quite cute. I mean the kind of brokenhearted sensation you get in your gut when you look into someone’s eyes and for the first time see what sort of emotional pain they are in; the sour taste you get in your mouth when you see a parent berating their child; the helplessness you feel when you see video images of the broken people in the Sudan; the feeling of pain that you get when you hear that a family is being torn apart by divorce; the cry that wells up in your throat when someone asks for prayer for a son or daughter that is struggling with same sex attraction; and fighting back the tears during a conversation with a single mom who is in desperate need and you have nothing to give. A broken heart is painful and messy. Oddly enough it seems like the longer we sit in a church pew the less our heart breaks and the more prepared we are for life’s brokenhearted moments with some little wicked truth like “I just knew they were having marriage problems!” or “If they would just quit smoking they would not have gotten cancer!” Church attendance is not meant to hide us from the world. It is meant to be a dangerous endeavor as we gather together in His name, listen for His heart, and go out and thwart the cowardly works of the wicked one. Our Father would much rather see us brokenhearted than to have us sing another song or know one other thing about the scriptures. He is looking for us to partake of the suffering of Jesus so that we can be like Him and give ourselves to mankind. Jesus’ heart broke and He gave His life for this wicked world of which we are a part. Jesus’ heart broke and He wept over a city. Jesus’ heart broke and He waded into a mass of thousands and healed each one of them. Check your heart the next time you hear that something horrible and painful and ugly has happened to someone. Did your heart break? It’s not necessarily “easy” but — with focus, determination, and continuous effort — it can be done in less time than you probably think. Follow the 7 steps below and you’ll soon be on your way to a leaner, healthier, and better-looking body… 1. Eat a balanced diet that is high in protein and includes plenty of “good” fats and carbs. Improving your eating habits is the first and most important step to reducing abdominal fat and losing weight. An effective “fat burning” diet is based around lots of high-quality proteins (such as lean meats, low-fat dairy, and whey protein), good amounts of healthy fats (such as nuts, seeds, olive oil and omega-3 fats) and enough high-fiber carbohydrates (such as fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains) to keep your energy levels high and your stomach feeling full. 2. Eat a good breakfast. It is extremely difficult to lose weight if you regularly skip breakfast. Eating a relatively large and healthy breakfast is one of the simplest, yet most effective, things you can do to keep your hunger in check, keep your energy high, and keep your metabolism going strong. At the very least eat some fresh fruit and yogurt in the morning so that you don’t overeat at lunch. A big breakfast is best but anything is better than nothing! 3. Drink 8-10 glasses of water per day. Drinking water throughout the day does lots of good things for your body and is an effective way to speed up the weight loss process. It helps you flush out toxins (very important when you’re trying to lose belly fat) and helps you maintain high energy levels. It’s also great for fat loss because it helps to optimize your metabolism so you burn fat even when you’re not working out. Finally, sipping water throughout the day and drinking a large glass right before meals is a very effective, safe, and easy way to reduce your appetite and prevent overeating. 4. Move as much as possible. Try to move as much as possible throughout the day. If the weather’s nice take a walk (or two). Don’t spend hours sitting at a desk without getting up every half hour or so and moving around a bit. Always take the “hard” way whenever possible. That means taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Park farther away from the door when you go to the mall, supermarket, etc. These extra efforts will quickly add up and you’ll burn more calories and lose more fat almost without realizing it. 5. Do higher-intensity cardio exercise 2-3 times per week. The best fat burning exercises are the ones that get your heart rate up and make you sweat for at least 20 minutes straight. It’s better to do 20 minutes of high-intensity aerobics than an hour of slow jogging. You’ll burn more fat — both during and after the workout — plus you’ll feel better and save your knees, hips, back, and ankles over the long run. 6. Do 1-2 intense, full-body strength training workouts per week. Working all your major muscle groups intensely, once or twice per week, is one of the best ways to burn body fat and look better fast. Full-body workouts that involve compound, multi-joint movements help to build muscle, burn fat, and strengthen your abdominal muscles… all at the same time. They also force your body to produce hormones that will continue to burn calories and strip off fat for hours after you’re done working out. If you don’t like weights that’s fine. Just do several sets of pushups, pullups, bodyweight squats, and lunges. These “big” exercises will give you a workout just as good as any you can get in the gym. 7. Set realistic goals. Increase your chances of weight loss success by creating realistic goals for yourself and reviewing those goals every day. Remember that you’re not going to be able to safely drop 10 pounds of fat in a week and you’re probably not going to have a totally flat stomach for at least a couple of months. It’s simply not possible to drop huge amounts of body fat very quickly in a safe and natural way. However, as long as you stay focused and determined — and you follow the healthy weight loss tips listed above every week — you absolutely will make great progress within a relatively short amount of time.
